The recent article on CLECs, "How the Rest Was Won," (PHONE+, March 2003) was right on. We were honored to have NetGain Communications mentioned and to have personally contributed my thoughts to the article. My comments, as presented, and our company's position may appear contradictory. I would like the opportunity to clarify the presentation and NetGain's thoughts on this important topic.
CLECs are, and will remain, an important facet of the communications market. NetGain understands that customers have a significant appetite for CLEC services. The events of the last three years, however, have made customers very selective in choosing alternatives to incumbent carriers and which CLEC(s) they trust. In our opinion, customers are not generally concerned about losing service if they select the best CLEC service providers available to them. Criteria such as the need for outside capital, debt levels and financial transparency are as important as customer care and network capabilities.
Medium and large customers are seeking redundant carrier solutions for their business continuity strategy. Many have experienced down time regardless of who their service provider is - incumbent or CLEC. Competitive providers offer unique service offerings, network diversity and customer support that set them apart for both traditional primary requirements and also as value-added alternatives.
NetGain is not specifically aware of any CLEC customers who have been left "high and dry." To the contrary, when CLECs have encountered financial difficulty, customers generally have seen very little difference in the level of network or customer service they receive. This is a testament to the resiliency of CLEC networks and the dedication of the industry participants.
The CLEC marketplace has been through some very turbulent times. The reputation of CLECs is in-tact and improving. CLECs now appear to be a permanent force within the communications industry.
