Has VoIP gained enough momentum in the market to change how we use telecom services?

July 7, 2005
Washington Business Journal

NetGain's Director of Network Engineering, Ray Kriss, was interviewed recently in the "Sources Say" column of the Washington Business Journal.

In response to the following:

Yahoo! has struck deals with telecoms to combine e-mail with wireless and land-line telephone services. Other Internet firms are looking at doing the same as VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) continues to gain traction. Has VoIP gained enough momentum in the market to change how we use telecom services? Are there still some problems facing VoIP?

Ray Kriss: "The broad spectrum of communication devices and collaborative applications now available through VoIP is the real story behind its success ... Every cable company's entry into telecommunications is predicated upon some iteration of VoIP. For network providers, there are significant opportunities to help customers evaluate and execute the transition to IP-powered networks that complement VoIP applications. For device and software manufacturers that will support the ways VoIP is utilized, the sky is the limit."
